INTRODUCTION

This, the fifth volume of Additional Manuscripts Add Mss has in general been compiled on the lines indicated in the Introduction to the first, apart from the modification in the detail given for maps, referred to in the Introduction to the fourth

Deeds of title are not as predominant as in previous volumes, and once again there are a large number of maps and plans Add Mss 2015-2101, 2103-2108, 2155-2158, 2193-2195, 2247-2249), but there will also be found a minute book of the Petworth Turnpike Trust (Add Mss 2212), documents of the Storrington - Balls Hut, Stopham Bridge - Pulborough, and Marehill - Southwater Turnpike Trusts (Add Mss 2109-2117), the log book of a ship journeying to India and the East Indies (Add Mss 2256), notes on German grammar by the future Cardinal Manning (Add Mss 2278), records of the Priory Park Cricket Club, Chichester (Add Mss 2336-2361a), and records of the East and North harden Village Club (Add Mss 2197-2203). The documents range in date from the compotus roll of Lord de la Warr's keeper of the guesthouse at Offington, 1444-1445 (Add Mss 2250), to the letter conveying to the West Sussex County Council the thanks of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh for a congratulatory address upon the birth of Prince Andrew, 1960 (Add Mss 2215)

Students are again asked to exercise care in quoting references and to use the form given in the Introduction to the first volume
