Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume K4 is the fourth in the series of four 'K' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of Ely, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Smith & Watkins, Messrs. Smiths & Gore, Messrs. Smiths, Gore & Ingram and Messrs. Cluttons. The preferments in this volume concern the following: the Ely Bishoprick Estates vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 7 January 1864 by vacancy; and the Ely Chapter Estates, which were transferred by commutation to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on the following dates: 25 March 1869 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 8 October 1869 by Order in Council; and 3 November 1896 (published in the London Gazette by Order in Council). ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports. ; It is important to mention that portions of both the Episcopal and Capitular Estates were re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporations by Orders in Council as follows; Ely Episcopal Estates on 1 May 1874 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 11 August 1874; and Ely Capitular Estates by exchange on 8 October 1869, 3 November 1896 and 20 May 1904. However, these estates were then transferred back as follows: the Episcopal Estates to the Church Commissioners as Bishopric Late Permanent Estates (under the Episcopal Endowments and Stipends Measure, 1943) on 1 January 1955 (effective date), published in the London Gazette by Order in Council on 18 February 1955; while the Ely Capitular Estates were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners as Chapter Late Permanent Estates (under the Cathedrals Measure, 1931) on 29 September 1935 (effective date), published in the London Gazette by Order in Council on 16 August 1935.; The volume also has annotations often regarding the disposal of property since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporate later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Cambridgeshire, parishes of Cambridge St. Giles, Ely Holy Trinity, Ely St. Mary, Haddenham, Leverington, Sutton, Thriplow, Tydd St. Giles,Wisbech St. Mary, Wishbech St. Peter, Witcham and West Wratting; the county of Norfolk, parishes of Emneth and Tottenhill; the county of Suffolk, parishes of the Winston, Debenham, Barking and Stradbroke; the county of Hertfordshire, parish of Little Hadham; the county of Huntingdonshire, parish of Witton; and the counties of Cambridgeshire & Norfolk, parish of Upwell.
