The donor was born in 1912 in Beswick. He had 1 younger sister. His father worked as Reel Hand at the Daily Mail, and was a member of N.A.T.S.O.P.A. Prior to World War One his mother worked at Moore and Crossleys Mill, New Moor Lane, as a Candlewick Weaver. He first came into contact with Clarion Cycling Club in 1922.
