Under the Town and Country Planning Act 1947 the County Council was responsible for the preparation of a development plan which included town maps for urban areas in the county. The published material submitted to the Minister of Housing and Local Government and approved in 1973 is listed as C/P 1/46-47. Town Map number 6 covered the area of the Borough of Lewes, and DL/A/8 includes plans created in the 1940s and early 1950s by the Borough Council, and work by the County Planning Department on the map itself and on other planning tasks relating to what was to become the Lewes District.
