Custodial history

Three copies of the Tithe Award and Map were prepared for each parish in accordance with the great Tithe Act of 1836 (6 & 7 Wm. IV., c. 71). One set was deposited with the Tithe Commissioners, one with the Diocesan Registrar, and one with the incumbent and churchwardens. It is the series formerly in the custody of the Diocesan Registrar from which this catalogue has been compiled: the documents were transferred to the two County Record Offices by the direction of the Master of the Rolls. Incumbents' copies have been deposited in some cases with parish records while other unofficial copies have been received with estate and family archives
