Introduction
The present collection was deposited in 1938 and 1946. It falls naturally into two sections, the first representing the estate papers of the Gibbs family, principally covering the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century (DD/GB, 1-36). The Barrow Court estate was purchased by Antony Gibbs of Tyntesfield, Wraxall, (1841-1907, father of 1st.Baron Wraxall) from John Henry Blagrave in 1881, the latter having bought it from his distant cousin, Montagu Gore in 1855. Antony Gibbs sold the estate to his younger brother, Henry Martin Gibbs (1850-1928) in 1884, on whose death it passed to the depositor, his eldest son. This part of the collection was in numbered bundles (147-193), the documents being lettered within the bundles. This arrangement has been retained, although breaks in the sequence indicate that a number of documents had been removed prior to deposit.
The earlier documents, the muniments of the Gore family of Barrow Court, which form the second part of this collection, (DD/GB, 37-156), did not come into the possession of the Gibbs family on their purchase of the estate. They are believed to have been disposed of by Montagu Gore's housekeeper, who was annoyed at the sale of the Court to J.H. Blagrave in 1855. They subsequently came into the possession of Charles T.Jefferies, a bookseller of Canynge's House, 97, Redcliffe St., Bristol, who was succeeded by his son Charles S.Jefferies. On the latter's death, three tin boxes of documents were sold to Bristol Corporation as one of the boxes contained material relating to the City. The remaining two boxes comprised the Gore collection, and these, chiefly at the instigation of Francis F.Fox, were given to H.M.Gibbs by the Corporation (see note with release of 1716 in DD/GB, 118). The Bristol historian, John Latimer (1824-1904), was invited to calendar the collection. He divided the documents into two groups which he called Gore deeds and Barrow deeds, the former being personal documents or out-county material, and the latter being Somerset estate documents. Within these groups the manuscripts were arranged chronologically and numbered consecutively. Smaller documents were guarded and bound up in nine volumes, arranged chronologically under four general subject headings. In the present calendar the loose documents have been gathered into bundles, and catalogued according to their content. The nine composite volumes (DD/GB, 148-156) have been catalogued in greater detail, since no rearrangement of their contents was possible, and will be found at the end of the calendar.
Pedigrees showing the descent of the Gore and related families will be found after this introduction. The Gibbs family will be found in Burke's Peerage under the family of Baron Aldenham.
