Immediate source of acquisition

These papers were received by the Centre through the good offices of Mr E.C. Thorne, Principal Lecturer in Industrial Relations at Coventry Polytechnic. They had been in the custody of Mr Tony Shell, a former Deputy Convenor, since the closure of the Coventry factory in 1980, and were received by the Centre in February/March 1983.

Administrative / biographical background

The Coventry Chain Company was founded in 1896 and acquired by the Renold Group in 1930. The works at Spon End, latterly employing over 800, including about 400 women shop floor workers, closed in 1980 following the fall in demand for transmission chains for the motor industry.
