Members of the Shepley family have lived in Hyde from the seventeenth century. At one point they lived on Lumn(?) farm. Donor's grandfather (father's father) was a floor cloth fitter, planning and laying carpets for the big houses in the district. Donor's father, born 1887, was a fireman on the railway from at least 1909, when Ernie was born, to 1952, when he retired. He was a member of ASLEF and on the branch committee. His mother (nee Ackley), also from Hyde, was a millworker before her marriage. She suffered from a hip injury and later strokes, so spent a great deal of her time in convalescent homes run by railway unions. Ernie born in 1909, was a member of SOGAT, on the Trades Council, and on the Board of Governors of the Polytechnic. In recent years he has been active in 'Grey Power' the Manchester radical pensioners organisation, and it was through them that he was contacted by Manchester Studies.
Father is Robert Shepley and the brothers are Thomas and Henry; his daughter is Elizabeth.
