INTRODUCTION
Mervyn James Cutten was born on 16th December 1916, son of Ewer Cutten, master coachbuilder of St Pancras, Chichester, and Alice (nee Smith). After education at St Margaret's School, Chichester, and Colebrook House School, Bognor, he joined the Royal Air force Volunteer Reserve at Tangmere in 1938, and in the Second World War he served in the Middle East. In the 1960's he became active in local politics, serving representing the South Ward as a Liberal on Chichester City Council between 1962 and 1965, and in 1964, he became licensee of the Murrell Arms, Barnham, a position which (in 1996) he still held. He served as Mayor of the Ancient Corporation of St Pancras, Chichester, in 1992, and Alderman in 1993, and is currently its archivist. His publications, along with countless articles, include Changing Chichester (Francis Steer co-author), Chichester Papers No.24, 1961; Some Inns and Alehouses of Chichester, Chichester Papers No.46, 1964; The Shayer Family of Painters (Brian Stewart co-author), 1981; Chichester Artists (Brian Stewart co-author), 1987; The Mill and The Murrell (Vic May co-author), 1992
In his introduction to The Mill and The Murrell, Mr Cutten wrote, "local history has been my hobby for most of my life". The records and books listed were deposited at the Record Office, usually by Mr Cutten in person, over the course of several months, and reflect that hobby in all its eclectic glory. For the purpose of this list, they have been arranged broadly by subject matter, and then by document type, eg. newspaper clippings, photographs, negatives. As well as a regular visitor at the Record Office, Mr Cutten has been an occasional depositor for many years; previous deposits, where deemed to be of sufficient relevance, have been incorporated into this list under their original catalogue marks. The publications are also indexed by author, place and subject in the Record Office's main library index
For brevity, Mr Cutten is referred to in this catalogue as MJC
