Title
Letter from Joseph Haughton to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury
Date
07 June 1940
Description

In this correspondence Joseph Haughton refers to Elizabeth Taylor Cadbury's letter entitled 'Friends & the World Council' which was published in 'The Friend', remarking on the relationship between the Religious Society of Friends and the World Council of Churches. Haughton remarks on the Council's creedal clause which identified Jesus Christ as God and Saviour, suggesting that 'if Friends cannot accept our Lord Jesus Christ as Lord & Saviour, we have no right to be called a Christian Church'. Reflecting Taylor Cadbury's own concerns about the 'vague and unanchored' nature of religious thought within the modern Society of Friends, Haughton comments that 'Friends in trying to keep clear of a creed are in danger of leaving out the foundation'.

Haughton concludes his letter with remarks about the 'drifting' nature of the Religious Society of Friends, adding that he had been present at Birmingham Meeting when William White had been recorded as a Minister.
