Administrative / biographical background

Chanctonbury R.D.C. was formed under the West Sussex Review Order of 1933 and came into existence on 1 April of that year. It was composed of the whole of the former Thakeham R.D.C., with the sole exception of Findon parish, together with all of the former Steyning West R.D.C. except Lancing, Sompting, Old Shoreham and Coombes. For a plan see: West Sussex County Council records WOC/CC7/2/23A.

There were no major boundary revisions between 1933 and 1974, and a list of the parishes of the Rural District Council appears below. Note, however, that as well as altering District boundaries the 1933 Review Order also changed many parish boundaries, and that only major changes appear below. For full details see Boundary Changes in West Sussex (W.S.R.O. MP 1348).

Amberley [consisting of the former Amberley and North Stoke parishes], Ashington [consisting of the former Ashington and Warminghurst parishes], Ashurst, Upper Beeding [consisting of the former Upper Beeding and Edburton parishes], Bramber [consisting of the former Bramber and Botolphs parishes], West Chiltington, Coldwaltham [consisting of the former Coldwaltham and Hardham parishes], Henfield, Parham [consisting of the former Parham, Greatham, Rackham and Wiggonholt parishes] Pulborough, Shermanbury, Steyning, Storrington, Sullington, Thakeham, Washington, Wiston and Woodmancote.
