Commonplace book of Edward Brooke, containing verses, orations, epigrams, acrostics, anagrams, and notes on shorthand or stenography. Some entries are written in shorthand. Included are anagrams based on the names of celebrities of the 16th and 17th centuries, including Elizabeth I, Robert Cecil, and Sir Edward Massey, Governor of Gloucester (ff. 16-18); a funeral elegy on John Pym, 1643, with an acrostic on his name (f. 30); epigrams on Anne of Denmark, Queen of James I, and their son Henry, Prince of Wales (ff. 31-32); elegies on the deaths of John Pym, 1643, and William Laud, 1645 (f. 37); 'the art of stenographie' (ff. 45-48); orations, including orations in Latin and English to mark the anniversary on 5 November of the Gunpowder Plot (ff. 53-69); 'The art of stenographie' (ff. 84-90); 'facetious jests' (ff. 90v-93r).
