The 2nd Earl of Devonshire, William Cavendish succeeded to the family seat in the House of Lords in early 1626 and just after these speeches on 8 May, he resisted Buckingham's attempt to interpret a speech of Sir Dudley Digges as treasonous (13 May 1626).
