Richard Toller (1805 - 1896) the founder of the firm was articled to a Mr Lamb of Kettering and moved to Leicester in 1827 to set up practice. From 1836 until his death he served as Clerk of the Peace to the Leicester Quarter Sessions, a fact which accounts for the presence of several Quarter Sessions records in this collection (see DE4384/336 - 341). For further biographical detail see 'The Wyvern' 28 April 1893.
Established initially in Cank Street, the firm later moved to offices in Wycliffe Street. Management passed to Richard and George Toller, sons of the original partners. During the twentieth century the name of the firm underwent various transitions with the advent of new partners: Toller Sons and Pochin; Toller, Burgess & Pochin; Toller, Pochin and Wright; Tollers. In 1993 the firm was listed as Toller Staunton.
