The property was formerly copyhold of the Manor of Brighton and was enfranchised on 24 Mar 1875. The properties were renumbered several times; 32-33 Brighton Place became 20-21 Market Street sometime between 1817 and 1860, and had become numbers 21-22 by 1875

In 1815 number 22 was described as -

Messuage, buildings and ground number 33 Brighton Place (N-S (W) 16' 2" (E) 15' 10", E-W 22' 1") with a small piece of ground at the rear (E-W 6' 2") and part of a draw well, late William Tuppen, and a parcel of ground with a cottage (N-S 17' 3", E-W 19' 5") at the rear of number 32 and on the east side of the parcel above, and was the north part of a parcel (N-S 33' 9", E-W 20' 6"), with right of way through a passage on the east side of a cottage occupied by Thomas Dent Ruddock and formerly by William Mighell

In 1817 number 21 was described as -

Messuage with buildings and land number 32 Brighton Place (N-S 18' 5", E-W 22' 1") with a small piece of ground at the rear (E-W 6' 2") with use of a draw well, occupied by Matthew Heithersay, staymaker, and a parcel of ground with a cottage (N-S 16' 6", E-W 19' 10") at the rear of number 33 and on the east side of the parcel above, and was the south part of a parcel (N-S 33' 9", E-W 20' 6"), with right of way through a passage on the east side of a cottage occupied by Thomas Dent Ruddock and formerly by William Mighell
