Description (What the record is about)
-
These are divided into deeds to London property, deeds to country property and expired leases. The 'deeds' also include expired leases and the first section of the 'expired leases' includes title deeds of all descriptions dating back to the 13th century.
The London title deeds have been divided into the following sections: City of London, Southwark, Hackney, Wapping, Lambeth and other London property. Most of these sections have then been sub-divided into geographical groupings. Within these, the deeds have been arranged alphabetically by the name of the street.
The Country title deeds have been arranged alphabetically by county and then by parish.
The expired leases for the most part have been arranged chronologically.
Detailed lists on index cards can be made available for the London deeds, the Country deeds and for the expired leases (up to 1829 only).
Before the records of St Thomas' Hospital were transferred to the Greater London Record Office, a detailed list of most of the title deeds and all the expired leases dating from before 1800 was prepared by the NRA. A copy of this is kept behind the desk in the Catalogue Room. In this list, all deeds and leases irrespective of archival groupings have been arranged by ancient county and by parish. The Catalogue Room copy of the NRA list has been annotated with the GLRO reference numbers which should be used for ordering documents.
Where a former reference number in the form eg. L9/1/1-3 or PH3/2/1-10 is given in the summary list a detailed catalogue of this bundle will be found in the NRA list.
