Second Series: Correspondence File

1896-1956

In this series of correspondence the letters have been arranged by subject rather than chronologically and include incoming letters as well as copies of those issued by the Clerk of the Council. These files contain not only correspondence but also maps, plans, byelaws, sealed orders, sale particulars, newspaper cuttings, government circulars and specifications of works

The files have been listed here with the number originally allotted to them by Horsham U.D.C. These appear to be some anomalies in this numbering scheme. Numbers have occasionally been crossed out or amended and files have sometimes been given the same numbers. There is no consistency in the starting date of these files although it can be safely asserted that from 1926, when the series of letter books finishes, all correspondence was kept in this form

Despite these idiosyncracies the files have been reconstructed into their original order and the list below includes the W.S.R.O. reference number, the original file number and the subject of the file

Some of the files in this series have subsequently been transferred to the later series of correspondence, UD/HO/21/3/1-108. Detailed cross references have not been made between these two series but the searcher should be made aware of the fact that subjects are frequently continued in the later series
