Administrative / biographical background (Historical or biographical information about the creator of the record and the context of its creation)

Bristol must have been granted a mayor in 1216. The court was doubtless established soon after though there is no record of its origin. By Edward III's reign it was well established for the 1373 charter contains a clause empowering the mayor to hold his customary court. It would seem that its powers were finally absorbed by the Tolzey Court sometime at the end of the eighteenth or beginning of the nineteenth centuries.
