Other Data: Born Liverpool 27/8/97 and educated at Birkenhead School. Son of Mrs Helena Elizabeth Hammond of 'Plas Gwyn', 4 St Margaret's Rd, Hoylake, she was a widow. His father, who predeceased his son, was a doctor in the Prison Service. He originally attested 16/5/16 in Liverpool and was posted to the Army Reserve as No 7537 in 10 KLR. He was mobilised on 22/7/16 and on 19/9/16 he transferred as No 58021 to 176 Company MGC and served with them in France as a L/Cpl. On 19/3/17 he embarked for France with 176 Company (Southampton - Havre). To Divisional School of Instruction 11/3/17. Rejoined unit 19/3/17. On 19/5/17 he was reprimanded for failing to take precautions against gas attacks. To MG School Camiers 29/7/17. Rejoined Company 25/8/17. He was 5' 10" tall and weighed 140lbs. He applied for a commission on 18/5/17 and on 23 October 1917 he was sent to the UK for the purpose of joining an Officer Cadet Battalion reverting to the rank of Private when he left France. He was accepted to No 17 Officer Cadet Battalion, Rhyl on 8/2/18 and posted to the MGC 26/6/18 (gazetted 23/7/18). He re-embarked for France 25/10/18 and joined the MGC School at Camiers the following day. He joined 35 Battalion MGC on 28/10/18 and was killed in action three days later. He was originally buried in Swevehem Churchyard, south west of Courtrai. In his will he left £1619 7s 8d.

From "Old Birkonians" : son of the late Dr T Hammond, born in 1897 and KIA in Belgium on 31/10/1918. Entered school in 1912 and left in 1916. He was in the Football XV and in the school Corps held the rank of Cpl. After leaving School he joined the ranks of the Liverpool Scottish and was later transf to the MGC. He saw considerable service in France as an NCO and was returned to England in Oct 1917 and was in hospital for three months with trench fever. After further training at Kinmel Park, he was gazetted to the MGC and had only been in France again for a week when he was killed. His Major wrote " I had just gone round the machine gun emplacements and had congratulated him on the excellent position of his gun He was standing by it with a section Sergt when a shell burst close to it and killed him instantaneously. If it had not been for the splendid position of his gun, the whole team would have been casualties. He had only been with us for two days, but the whole battalion felt his loss very keenly. He was a very able officer and we were very sorry to lose him." Photograph p 97.;
