Ecumenical in its nature, Toc H existed to promote Christian fellowship and social service. Its members were originally ex-servicemen and women.
The Toc H movement started a few years after the First World War in an attempt to foster the spirit of friendship and self-sacrifice which came out of the war. Its name came from the institution known as Talbot House, or "Toc H", a recreational centre established by the Rev P B Clayton in late 1915, at Poperinghe on the Western Front.
The organisation had nearly 1500 branches by the late 1930s: that in Clitheroe was established in 1937
