Description

Collection of deeds and leases relating to several properties in Batcombe acquired by Rev. Thomas Coney over the period 1795-1833. The majority of the properties concerned were purchased from the Davis, George, Bo(a)rd, Coombs, Chaddock and Millard families, all of Batcombe.

The original arrangement of the bundles has been retained in the following catalogue, each pertaining to a specific property. The collection also contains a map of Batcombe by J M Tucker, Bristol, dated 1828.

In the following catalogue it may be assumed, unless stated otherwise, that parties named belong to the parish in the heading and that the Revd. Thos. Coney was the purchaser.

Administrative / biographical background

The Rev. Thomas Coney, the son of Bicknell, merchant of Leadenhall Street, City of London, was instituted as rector of Batcombe on 20th March 1790. He died at Batcombe on 29th December 1840, aged 81, and was buried there on 6th January 1841. His brother, William Coney, was curate of Batcombe 1790-95.
