Administrative / biographical background

The brothers William and James Hayes started work in the Westleigh will around 1820, but in 1836 separated; William became one of the founders of the cotton doubling firm of Isherwood and Hayes (now Carrington Mills on Kirkhall Lane) while James continued to operate on his own for a time until 1844, when he moved from Westleigh Mill to Barlow's factory and was joined by his brother John. His brother-in-law, Robert Thorp, joined in the partnership which, from 1846, was known as Thorp and Hayes. In 1855 the factory was burnt down and the original Victoria Mills built on the present site in 1856. In 1874 James and John Hayes drew up an agreement with Alfred and James Thorp, sons of Robert Thorp; the firm was from then onwards known as J. and J. Hayes - it became a private limited company with James Hayes as its chairman in 1881. In the 20th century became a subsidiary of Hayeshaw Ltd., and since 1964 has become a branch of Courtaulds Ltd. (Spinning Division).
