Receipt (by deed indented) from William Strudwicke, gent. mayor, and the aldermen and citizens of Chichester, to John Craddocke, LL.D. (by the order and appointment of William Thorne, dean of Chichester, and ordinary, and Hugh Barker, his principal official)
Date
25 Jul 1617
Description

Of £20, being a legacy given by Mary (wid. of John Morie, yeo., decd.), as a perpetual stock, to be put forth by the mayor, the dean of Chichester; and ordinary, and his principal official, and the aldermen, to three honest tradesmen, inhabitants and keepers of families within the city, i.e. £6 13s. 4d. apiece, gratis in free loan towards the relief and maintenance of themselves and their families for three years, putting in [a] bond, in double the value of their portion with two such sureties as the mayor and the others named shall allow, to repay the portion at the end of three years; with covenant from the mayor, aldermen, and citizens, to the dean, as ordinary, and his successors to dispose the stock in like manner from three years to three years for ever

Recites: that said Mary Morie in her will bequeathed the remainder of her goods, after payment of her debts, legacies and other charges, to be employed for ever to godly and charitable uses in Chichester, and that her executors in trust yielded this remainder to said Hugh Barker, as may appear among the records in the office of the dean's registrar, and that it is appointed by the dean, as ordinary, and said Hugh Barker, his official principal (to whom the disposing of such legacies chiefly belongs), with the consent of George Arderne, gent., and the other executors of trust, that the said legacy of £20, being the remainder of the goods of said Mary Morie, shall be delivered to the mayor and citizens to be used as above

One part of the indenture sealed with the seal of the mayor and citizens, to remain in the office of the dean's registrar; the other part sealed with the seal of the office of the dean's court to remain among the city records
