Books of the Indian Audit Office

The information in these books duplicates the information in the corresponding books of the Accountant General's Department. But the audit books for the period up to 1860, although often poorly maintained with closely written material much of which is crossed out, occasionally record information which is not readily available in the Accountant General's volumes. It has not always been possible to ascertain whether a particular volume belonged to the Audit or Accountant General's Department, and in some instances it has been found that the labels are incorrect. In a case of doubt, the volume has been regarded as having originated in the Accountant General's Department.

Information concerning the duties of the Auditor, from 1724, will be found in IOR/L/AG/9/8/1. Other information about the Auditor and the members of his staff is contained in some of the volumes in IOR/L/AG/30.
