Single-acting engine, with 56 inch cylinder, 9 foot stroke, chain connection.General view of the engine, outside front view of the engine and part of the boiler, inside front view of the engine and longitudinal and cross-sections of the engine, ground plan of the engine and boiler - reverse drawings; sections and plan of the boiler.
The following drawings are all marked as applying to "Wheal Virgin 56 & 58 inch cylinders": front view of engine house - reverse drawing; sections and plan of condenser - reverse drawing; section of upper nozzle and cross pipe and plan of nozzle; chain links; eduction pipe - reverse drawing marked as being for "Wheal Virgin No. 1, 2, 3"; air pump bucket. These drawings were used both for this engine and the 58 inch Wheal Virgin Elvan and Wheal Maid East engines ordered at the same time. None of the drawings are dated.Original Portfolio or 'Book' No. 14. Catalogue of Old Engines p. 302.
For Consolidated Mines. Wheal Virgin was a part of Consolidated Mines, which was formed in 1782, when this engine was set to work. According to the List of Engines made at Soho, the engine was stopped in Jan. 1794, and was later intended to replace the West Wheal Virgin engine [see Portfolio 5/1298a].
