Description (What the record is about)
-
Survey volume GG5 is the fifth in the series of seven 'GG' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of York, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume covers the surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Pickering & Smith and Messrs. Smith & Watkins, Smiths Gore Dale & Ingram and Messrs. Smith & Watkins. The preferments in this volume concern the York Archbishoprick Estates, which were vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on the following dates: 30 June 1861 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 26 July 1861by Order in Council; and by exchange on 1 January 1869 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 19 March 1869 by Order in Council.; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred.; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports.; However, it is important to mention that a portion of the York Archiepiscopal Estates was re-endowed back to the Ecclesiastical Corporation on the following dates: 30 June 1861 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 26 July 1861; by exchange on 1 January 1869 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette on 19 March 1869 by Order in Council. These estates were then later transferred back to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners as Archbishopric Late Permanent Estates (under the Episcopal Endowments and Stipends Measure, 1943) on 6 April 1943 (effective date), which was published in the London Gazette by Order in Council on 23 April 1943.; The volume also has annotations often regarding the disposal of property or land since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporate later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Yorkshire, parishes of Farlington, , Guisborough, Huttons Ambo, Keyingham, Sheriff Hutton, Southwell and Upton; and the county of Nottinghamshire, parishes of Bleasby, Blyth, Farnsfield, Edingley, Halam, Harworth, Hayton and Scrooby.
