Born and educated in Newcastle, Belt travelled in Australia, Nova Scotia, Nicaragua and Siberia between the years 1852 and 1878. He worked as a mining geologist, and was particularly interested in glacial geology. Belt wrote The Naturalist in Nicaragua (1874), and was a Fellow of the Geological Society of London.
