Description

The volume chiefly comprises copies of letters from Malcolm relating to the period when he returned to England in 1831 and later that year became Tory Member of Parliament for the 'rotten borough' of Launceston, supporting his friend the Duke of Wellington in opposition to the (Whig) Reform Bill. The correspondence covers a variety of subjects, notably:. The Reform Bill and the constituency of Launceston. Malcolm's hostile views on 'this Revolutionary Bill' (folio 57) and his fears for the constitution, the country's future and control of the Indian Empire are expounded on numerous occasions; Indian affairs, including administrative matters and reforms introduced by Malcolm, rumours concerning the circumstances of the death of Lieutenant-General Thomas Sidney Beckwith, Chief of the Bombay Army, January 1831 (folio 43), the cases of (officer?) Burnwall and of Captain Hawkins, and relations with the Court of Directors (East India Company); Recommendations for promotion, testimonials, character references and letters of introduction by Malcolm; Question of the Irish Poor laws, Irish peasantry and labouring classes, and its comparison by Malcolm with their English counterparts (folios 69-79); Family matters and Malcolm's personal health; Malcolm's purchase of Warfield Hall [Berkshire] (folios 123 and 184); Correspondents are listed here below in alphabetical order by surname of correspondent followed by the date and corresponding folios. Arrangement

The letters are bound in chronological order from the front of the volume to the rear of the volume, 23 March 1831-24 January 1832. Each page is interleaved with a blank page of blotting paper.

Foliation: the foliation sequence (used for referencing) commences at the inside front cover with 1, and terminates at the inside back cover with 190; these numbers are written in pencil, are circled, and are located in the top right corner of the recto side of each folio. Pagination: the original pagination sequence dating from the 1920s is also present in parallel between folios 5 and 187; these numbers are also written in pencil, but are not circled. This sequence correlates to the description found in Samuel Charles Hill's Catalogue of the Home Miscellaneous Series of the India Office Records (London: HMSO, for the India Office, 1927).
