Administrative / biographical background (Historical or biographical information about the creator of the record and the context of its creation)

In 1851 a Committee was formed with the aim of building a church, free from pew rents, near the junction of Waterloo Road and Broughton Lane, on a site given by the Earl of Derby. The church was built by 1863, but a controversy arose over the intention of the trustees to keep it free, and the Bishop, James Prince Lee, refused to consecrate it. It was not consecrated until June 1874 by Bishop James Fraser.
A District was assigned from the parish of Manchester, by Order in Council, 20 October 1874 (London Gazette, 20 October), but part of this was returned to Manchester by Order in Council, 18 May 1881, (London Gazette, 27 May). Part was assigned to the new St. Clement's, Broughton, by Order in Council, 15 July 1881 (London Gazette. 29 July). In 1904 a new parish, St. Saviour's, Chetham, was taken from it, by Order in Council, 7 March, (London Gazette, 8 March), but as no church was consecrated, the District was re-assigned to St. Alban's by Order in Council, 15 June 1945, (London Gazette, 19 June).
St. Alban's was extensively damaged in the Christmas Blitz of 1940. The school was licensed for services until the church was restored and re-opened on 20 April 1957.
Due to a dwindling congregation the church closed in 1994. The last service was held on 6 February 1994.
