For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He rendered valuable service in the assembly for an attack and in rallying his section during the advance. Later he located and engaged an enemy machine gun, which was holding up the attack and inflicting considerable casualties, and succeeded in knocking it out. He also made a daring daylight reconnaissance, which enabled the line to be advanced, and on another occasion captured four prisoners. He set a splendid example to his men.;
