Description

Correspondence concerning paper, The structure of haemoglobin II, by Lawrence Bragg and [Max] Perutz.

1. Bragg to Martin, 21 Aug. 1953: is enclosing paper which follows on from former paper on haemoglobin. Hopes it can appear in the Proceedings. Looks as if the main haemoglobin problem is breaking. Perutz has attached two mercury atoms to the molecule; from the resulting changes in the diffractio picture it seems possible to assign signs to the diffracted spots. They are trying to make the complete Fourier picture. If it works out, he hopes to send a third paper showing the picture of the molecule. W.L. BRAGG/42A/76

2- Martin to Bragg, 11 Dec. 1953: asks if Bragg or one of his

3. Co-authors would read paper, The structure of haemoglobin II, at meeting on 25 February. If Bragg can accept invitation, would like him to return the enclosed form. Summary of the lecture for the meeting notice should be as widely intelligible as possible. With form and notes for guidance of Royal Society lecturers and authors. W.L. BRAGG/42A/77-78

4. Martin to Bragg, 11 Dec. 1953: acknowledges receipt of galley proofs, offprint form and cheque. W.L. BRAGG/42A/79

5. Bragg to Martin, 16 Dec. 1953: acknowledges letter about reading paper. He and Perutz would prefer to wait. It is an interim paper. They are preparing the final papers. Would like to read two papers later, one about methods, the other on results. W.L. BRAGG/42A/80

6. Martin to Bragg, 22 Dec. 1953: Sir David Brunt has agreed to Bragg's request that he should reserve reading of his paper [on haemoglobin] until further work has been presented for publication. W.L. BRAGG/42A/81
