Orders were received that the 34th Division would extend its front on the night 26/27th July and relieve French troops in the positions held by them as far south as (unreadable) south of Coupemain. This order was subsequently cancelled and the Division was relieved in its present position by troops of the 19th French Division on the night of 27/28th July. Units being concentrated as follows: -
Bois de Nadon
101 Brigade and A Company M.G.C. Bois de Bueue (Northern End)
102 Brigade Bois de Nadon (Eastern End)
103 Brigade and D Company M.G.C. Bois de Boeuf (Southern End)
HQ B&C Companies M.G.C. Bois de Nadon (Western End)The 34th Division moved or into the line east of Oulchy-la-Ville on the night 28/29th, in preparation for an attack the following morning. A & D Companies moved with Brigade Groups to which they were attached. HQ B&C Companies moving under Battalion Orders into a position in the Bois de Bailette forming part of the Divisional Reserve.
29/7/18 Bois de Bailette
An attack was carried out by 101 & 103 Brigades on the morning of the 29th inst at 4:15am, the objective being the high ground north-east of Beugneux and Servenay. The attack made some progress but was held up by M.G. fire from the wooded hill immediately south of Beugneux, and although the left Brigade succeeded in reaching its objective in parts, the infantry were withdrawn to an outpost line about 200 yards west of Grand Rosoy-Beugneux Road. The guns of A&D Companies 34 Battalion MGC did excellent work in engaging hostile M.G.s during the advance, and in keeping down M.G. fire during the consultation.30/7/18
The situation remained unchanged throughout the 30th inst and the enemy made no attempt to counter attack.31/7/18
The operations of July 29 were continued on the morning of August 1st. The objective of the 34th Division being the Brown Line shown on attached map (appendix B). The attack was a complete success and the taking of the high ground north-east of Beugneux caused the enemy to fall back in a general retirement, eventually to the line of the Vesle.
B&C Companies 34th Battalion MGC moved up from the Bois de Bailette on the night of 31/1st to dugouts in the Paris defence line in order to be ready to cover and support the action of the infantry. Battalion HQ moved to the Paris defence line on the early morning of August 1st. The 127th French Division was held in readiness to move through the 34th Division as soon as the latter had reached its objective.
