Description

Folio 87: Petition by the Merchant adventurers of England 'and others trading for Hamburg' to the King. Thank him for communicating to them the recent memorial from Hamburg residents [i.e. English factory] in which they, petitioners, detect 'a fruitlesse designe' to prevent further proceedings of the lords' committee in examination of the right of their demand from city of Hamburg for [reparation of] losses sustained by Dutch attack [on their ships] on river Elbe [in Sept. 1666] and confirmation of King's judgement already passed in that case; they further find [in Hamburg residents' memorial] suggestions which King will see to be inconsistent with truth of matter; state that time appointed by committee for final hearing of evidence of both parties has elapsed, yet they have refrained from 'importuning' lords' committee during session of parliament; but they will now offer [Hamburg] residents reciprocal exchange of attestation and proofs as ordered by committee whom they will gladly attend in order to [help to] complete their [final] report to King; since they, petitioners, do not believe King would think it in their interest to delay further final judgement, they, as claimants, now pray that they may stand or fall by King's royal judgement of their case upon committee's report and not otherwise.
