Folio 260: Waldegrave to Newcastle. Fleury accuses Britain of obstructing the conclusion of a Defensive Treaty because of British refusal to enter any contingency agreement against future Austrian aggression; Fleury believes the Austrians wish to subjugate the Empire, and then Europe, and that the Turks are an insufficient counterpoise; French do not wish the Balkans to be taken over by Austria; Fleury reaffirms his neutrality regarding Britain and Spain; death of one of the Sicilian Abbots; St. Malo privateers will probably fight for Spain.
Date and place: 1738 July 2 Paris.
