Administrative / biographical background

The Clinical Research Board was established in 1953 to advise the Medical Research Council (MRC) on the promotion of clinical research, by the instigation and funding of research projects. Its chairman was to be appointed by the MRC and, if the chairman was not already a member of the MRC, he was to be ex officio an assessor to it. Five members of the Board were to be nominated by the Health Departments, and a further five by the MRC. The Board continued to advise the MRC until September 1974, when the MRC set up the Social and Environmental Medicine Research Policy Committee over three new research boards (which replaced the Clinical Research Board and the Biological Research Board) and the Tropical Medicine Research Board.
