Description

Folio 87: Lord Tyrawly to Duke of Newcastle. Real reason for Capt. Olny's arrest and temporary imprisonment (for he has now been released and sails this day) is that King of Portugal was piqued because Olny had peremptorily refused to fire a salute in honour of procession of Feast of Corpus Christi, as was customary. Complains of arbitrary conduct of R.N. Captains who are a law unto themselves and outside his control, particularly instancing Capt. Byng. Portuguese will lodge an official complaint at London that boat's-crews should not be allowed to carry arms, but in practice it is essential they should do so.
