Description

Folio 157. To [? Trenchard]. [Recipient not named. There is no heading or salutation]. On the occasion of Strattmann's death, gives character sketches of the Emperor and his chief ministers. The Emperor is 'observed to be of an irresolute wavering temper, on which the last impressions ever leave the deepest marks; this occasions that he is frequently torn severall ways by the different inclinations of his ministers who in a manner govern him by turns'. Describes in some detail the ministers' background and antecedents and their ascendance to high office, power and influence, adding particulars of their departmental responsibilities and individual methods.

Date and Place: 1693 [Oct 20/30] Dresden

Note
Concluding paras [hand of Plantamour]. The date at the head of this copy, in Stepney's hand, 'Dresden 10/20 Oct: 1693' is obviously an error. Strattmann died on Oct 25 N.S. and Stepney gave first notice of his death in his shorter letter to Trenchard of Oct 20/30, see f.154, ante, of which this dispatch clearly represents an elaboration. Another, unsigned, copy, entirely in the hand of Plantamour is in SP 81/87, ff.12-15 and bears the date '20 Oct' which must mean Oct 20/30. It has neither salutation nor indication of recipient.
