Bill of Guichard de Charron junior, sheriff of Northumberland, acknowledging receipt on 28 August 1309 of a royal writ, dated 28 June [1309], by the hand of John son of John of Durham, ordering him to summon before the king 24 men of the neighbourhoods of Durham, Newton and Herrington (Herington'), Durham, with no affinity to John son of John or Anthony [Bek], bishop of Durham, to recognise whether the bishop, by Richard de Stanlawe and other of his ministers, caused to be seised unjustly into the bishop's hand 40 librates of land with appurtenances in Durham, Newton and Herrington, and goods and chattels, namely oxen, cows, bullocks, heifers, calves, horses, mares, foals, sheep, pigs, corn, rye, barley, oats, peas, beans and hay to the value of £200, which they still withhold, or whether John was in debt to the bishop for £300 and more from the time he was his bailiff and farmer of the vill of Durham, whereby Richard de Stanlawe deemed that he ought to be distrained.
