Description

L3710. Contested Cause.

Captured ship: Lust Rust, master Matthijs De Harder.

History: a Dutch ship, bound from Paramaribo, Surinam to Amsterdam, laden with sugar, coffee, cotton and cocoa; taken on 3 June 1803 (under the embargo) 20 Dutch miles north west of the Lizard, by HMS Minotaur (Charles John Moore Mansfield commanding) and brought into Plymouth.

Documents: Mail in transit from Surinam to the Netherlands to individuals and to the Council of the American Colonies; mainly unopened letters [opened in 2017], and now numbered 1-160, with internal numbering within packets and envelopes. Principal enclosures as follows:-

  • 1, 1a: Court wrappers, no. 3710.
  • 2-10: Letters to Van Arp and Hageman, Amsterdam. Enclosures include bills of lading; further mail in transit, including to Brussels; accounts; list of deficiencies; attested copy of extract from the records of the Secretary and of the Judiciary of the Colony of Surinam; account books of the Tombesburg Plantation, 1801-1802 (2 volumes) and of the Nieuwe Hoop (New Hope) Plantation, 1798, 1801-1802 (3 volumes) (10A-10E).
  • 11-18: Letters to Verreul & Zoon, Amsterdam. Enclosures include bills of lading; accounts (18A) and monthly lists of the Zelden Rust & Welgelegen Plantation, 1802 (18C-18N).
  • 19-34: Various letters to Amsterdam. Enclosures include accounts; bills of lading; further mail in transit to Amsterdam; list of goods (27A1); further mail in transit to Elberfeld and Amsterdam enclosing advertisements (Dutch and English) (27C and 27C1; 27D and 27D1; 27E and 27E1, see also 35A, 47A, 57A, 76A, 111A, 129A); bill of exchange d (29A1).
  • 35-47: Various letters to Amsterdam. Enclosures include advertisements (35A, see also 27C1, 27D1, 27E1, 47A, 57A, 76A, 111A, 129A); inventory of the Nieuwe Mocha (New Mocha) Plantation (36A); further mail in transit to Paris and London; accounts; bills of lading; bills of exchange.
  • 48-66: Various letters to Amsterdam. Enclosures include list of goods required (48A); inventory of the Guineeuwsche Vriendschap (Guinea Society) Plantation, 1803 (49C); account book, April-December 1802 (1 volume, 50A); further mail in transit to Amsterdam; attested copies of entries of baptism, Surinam, 1789, 1798 (54A-54B); bills of exchange; advertisement (57A, see also 27C1, 27D1, 27E1, 35A, 47A, 76A, 111A, 129A); further mail in transit to Neuenburg, duchy of Oldenburg (German dialect) (58B); bills of lading; accounts (61A); lists of goods (62B, 63A), with samples of fabric and tape (63B) and string (63C).
  • 67-78: Various letters to Amsterdam. Enclosures include bills of lading; accounts; further mail in transit to Haarlem (70A), regarding Elzenhagen Plantation (73A), to Paramaribo (73C); advertisement (76A, see also 27C1, 27D1, 27E1, 35A, 47A, 57A, 111A, 129A); accounts Vlammenburg Plantation, 1802 (1 volume, 78A).
  • 79-91: Various letters to Amsterdam. Enclosures include further mail in transit to Amsterdam; bills of lading; list of requirements, Nooitgedagt Plantation (83A); a poem entitled ‘Alida’ (part of letter in 84 and 84A, German); accounts (86A, 88A).
  • 92-110: Various letters to Amsterdam. Enclosures include bill of exchange (92A); accounts (94A, 95A, 96A); bills of lading; further mail in transit to Amsterdam; inventory of the Guineeuwsche Vriendshap (Guinea Society) Plantation, 1803 (110B).
  • 111-128: Various letters to Amsterdam. Enclosures include advertisement (111A, see also 27C1, 27D1, 27E1, 35A, 47A, 57A, 76A, 129A); further mail in transit to Zeist near Utrecht (113B, 113B1), to Amsterdam (119A), to Leiden (125A); accounts (114A, 118A); inventories, Boxel Plantation, 1803 (120B), Annaszorg Plantation, 1802 (124B); bills of lading (121A) and of exchange (123A); accounts (1 volume, 122A) and monthly lists (122B-122M, 122B1-122M1), Kortevreugd and Kleinshoven Plantations, 1802; Manifest and accounts, Joan and Maria ship, 1803 (126B-126C).

Enclosures include manifest (145P) and bills of lading (145B-145O), Anna and Louisa ship, 1803; manifest, accounts and bill of lading (146A-146C), Maasstroom ship, 1803; bill of lading and accounts of goods relating to Maasstroom ship, 1803 (147B-147X).
  • 148-160: Various letters to Alkmaar; Anholt; Bergen op Zoom; Leyden; Nieuwendam; Schiedam; Utrecht; Vlissingen; Vlaardinge; Zierikzee; also to Kaiserswerth (Germany, letter 160A, German). Enclosures include further mail in transit to Enkhuisen (148A) and Amsterdam (149B); bills of lading (154A, 155A, 156A-156B); accounts (158A).
