Description

This series contains files of the Crown Agents' Pay Division on the approval and payment of salaries, allowances and pensions to staff working for overseas principals and to their families. They include papers on the rights and responsibilities of staff in connection with such matters as National Health Service contributions and income tax, and the effects on payments of currency devaluations and other problems.

The functions of the Pay Division since 1833 have included the payment of Crown Agents Office salaries, allowances and pensions; the payment of salaries and allowances of officers on leave from oversea governments; the payment of pensions and gratituities on behalf of oversea governments; the management on behalf of oversea governments of widows' and orphans' pension funds and schemes, superannuation and provident funds; the settlement of monies due to the estate of deceased officers; the collection of UK income tax and of colonial and overseas income taxes; and the payment of invoices for goods ordered on behalf of oversea governments.
