2 items (originally enclosed with letters from railway companies to the Foreign Office, January 1918) extracted from FO 371/3167. South-east Brazil. 2 railway maps. (1) 'San [Saõ] Paulo (Brazilian) Railway Company Limited. Map shewing this company's line with the several extensions and branches in connection with it': also showing a 'privileged zone' within 18-19 miles of main lines and the north and south 'coffee zones'. Reference table to railway lines and their gauges. Scale: 9.8 cm to 100 km. (2) 'Map of the Leopoldina Railway, Brazil, 1911', showing relief and drainage, main settlements, state boundaries and connecting railways. Reference table to the railways and extensions. Scale: 1:1,000,000. Cardinal points to both items. Both items published by Waterlow and Sons Ltd, London Wall, c1916. Dimensions: (1) 54.5 cm x 44 cm; (2) 70.5 cm x 60 cm. The railway companies sought the Foreign Office's support in petitioning the Brazilian Government to permit the raising of freight rates in the face of rising wartime costs.
