Atlantic Ocean. Admiralty Chart: 'Deep Sea Soundings in the North Atlantic from Ireland to Newfoundland' Scale: 1 inch to about 100 miles. By Lieutenant J Dayman, Royal Navy, HMS Cyclops, 1857. Upright sounding by R Hoskyn, Master, HMS Porcupine, 1862. Surveys made for the laying of telegraphic cable along the arc of the Great Circle from Valentia to Newfoundland. Two sections of the sea floor with notes on the composition of the bed. Manuscript additions show the cables laid in 1857 and 1865 and the points at which they broke. A further line shows the trade of the cable-laying vessel, 7-25 July 1866, with extracts from daily bulletins. Malby and Son lithographers.
