The Universities Advisory Committee was established in 1946, with the following functions: a) to advise upon the placing and supervision of British Council scholars coming to this country from overseas;b) to supervise the allocation to British students of scholarships to foreign universities granted by governmental or other bodies overseas which request the British Council to undertake the administration of scholarship schemes or schemes for the interchange of students;c) to consider and advise upon problems connected with the appointment of university teachers from Great Britain to posts in universities abroad and the problems of interchange of university teaching staffs;d) such other functions of an allied character as the British Council may invite the committee to undertake as necessity arises.

Of the various sub-committees of the Universities Advisory Committee, the Commonwealth University Interchange sub-committee later became a committee in its own right in 1949.
