Map 4. New Zealand: New Plymouth: 'Sketch in New Zealand Enclosure No 1 in Despatch 25'. Panoramic view of New Plymouth (consisting of a single street and scattered houses) and harbour in foreground; fortifications (including line of 'Martello Towers') and barracks on Marsden Hill in middle ground; range of hills, ravines and downs in background; dominated by Mount Egmont [Mount Taranaki]. Lithographed and printed at the Topographical Department, War Office, 1860. Sheet embossed with the Royal arms and with the seal of the Secretary of State, Topographical Department, War Office. Formerly in the War Office map library, in portfolio under reference: 'Oceania. (New Zealand.) Battles, Sieges and Warlike Operations. 2'. The original of Gore Browne's despatch number 25 of 13 March 1860 is in CO 209/153 ff 289-291 (stamped 'Printed for Parliament March 1861'). The original drawing has not been found. Gore Brown's despatch, with the view, was printed in a Command Paper for Parliament: 1861 XLI [2798] 15. Dimensions: 35 cm x 21 cm, on sheet 48 cm x 29.5 cm.
