Description

Folios: 145-145v. Bedfordshire. Inquisition.

Place or subject: An inquisition taken by pretext of that same writ of Edward I, and returned into his Chancery, concerning the lands and tenements of William le Latymer the elder, etc. The jurors say that he held nothing of the king in chief on the day he died in that county. They say that he held the manor of Sutton and a certain part of Potton of the honor of Huntyngdon [Huntingdon] of Robert de Bruiz by the service of half a knight's fee and of a fourth part of one knight's fee, which are of the inheritance of Alice, his wife. They say that this manor with a dovecote, garden and curtilage is worth per annum beyond reprises 6s 8d. They say that there are there ninety acres of arable land worth 63s 4d a year, the price of an acre being 4d. There are there thirty acres of meadow worth 45s a year, each acre being worth 18d. And there are there eight acres of pasture worth 4s a year, the price of an acre being 6d. Also thirteen yardlands in villeinage and they pay yearly in all things £8 13s 4d, each yardland paying 13s 4d a year in all issues at the two terms of the year in equal portions, namely at Michaelmas and the Annunciation. And there are there eight cottars and they pay 12s a year at those terms. And there are there certain freeholders who pay £6 13s 4d annually at those terms. And there is there a certain market at Potton worth annually half a mark. Also two mills, one water and the other wind, and they are worth 20s a year. Also a certain wood whose profit, as in underwood, is worth 40s a year. Also a certain heath whose profit is worth 30s a year. There is there certain turbary worth half a mark a year. Pleas and perquisites are worth 20s a year. Sum £28 12d. They also say that, on the day he died, William held in the same county the manor of Catebery [Cadbury], which is a manor of the inheritance of Alice, his wife. And that manor is held of Roger de Bello Campo [Beauchamp] by the service of a fortieth part of one knight's fee, and the manor with the garden and dovecote is worth 5s a year beyond reprises. They say that there are there 180 acres of arable land worth £4 10s a year, each acre being worth 6d. And there are there sixteen acres of meadow worth 24s a year, each acre being worth 18d; and three acres of pasture worth 2s a year, the price of an acre being 8d. There is there a certain wood whose profit, as in underwood, is worth 40s a year. There are also there certain freeholders who pay 30s annually at two terms, namely at Michaelmas and the Annunciation. Sum £9 11s. They say that William held on the day he died certain tenements in the vill of Potton, which tenements William acquired in his demesne as of fee of William Burdet, and they are held of the honor of Huntyngdon [Huntingdon] of John de Hastynges [Hastings] by the service of a fifth part of a knight's fee. And there is there a certain messuage worth nothing beyond reprises. And there are there seventy acres of arable land worth 23s 4d a year, each acre being worth 4d. And five acres of meadow worth 7s 6d a year, each acre being worth 18d. And there are there two yardlands in villeinage which pay annually for all services 27s at those two terms in equal portions. And there are there certain freeholders who pay 50s 10d a year at the same terms. The pleas and perquisites are worth 3s a year. They also say that William acquired 10s of annual rent in the vill of Stratton in fee and he died seised of Stephen de Edeworth [Edworth], and William received that rent at the two terms of the year, namely Michaelmas and the Annunciation in equal portions. Sum £6 20d. They say that William Latymer, son of this William, is his next heir and aged thirty years and more.
