Description

Folios: 12v-13. Derby; Ferrers. Agreement.

First party: Robert de Ferrers, earl of Derby.

Place or subject: Whereas Henry III admitted the earl to his peace and delivered him from prison, and with the assent of Edmund, son of the king [Edmund of Lancaster], to whom the king had given all the earl's lands and tenements by his charter by occasion of the earl's trespasses at the time of the disturbance in the realm of England, he handed over to the earl those lands and tenements by a fine of £50,000, which the earl made with Edmund, as is more fully contained in a deed completed between the earl and his mainpernors and Edmund, so that the king and his heirs are to be secure that the earl will behave well and faithfully towards him and his heirs in the future, the earl grants that, if he at any time comes against the king or his heirs in any way, by moving war against them or carrying arms, or also by going in any way against the covenants made between the earl and his mainpernors and Edmund by the deed, and it happens that he is convicted, that all the earl's lands and tenements are to pass to the king and his heirs, and the earl and his heirs are to remain disinherited forever.
