Administrative / biographical background

The Electoral Commission is tasked with ensuring every person who is eligible to register and to vote is aware of how to do so, through targeted campaigning. The Commission took over responsibility for voter education (public awareness) from the Home Office on 1 July 2001 when the Commission was established. Campaign materials include TV and radio adverts, social media, and printed ephemera. The Commission's campaigns are run in all areas of the United Kingdom covering elections: United Kingdom General Elections, Local and Mayoral Elections as well as Referendums such as the Northeast devolution referendum (Northeast Referendum) held on 18 November 2004. The Electoral Commission also runs specific campaigns aimed at particular groups, including home movers and young people who are new to voting.
