Captured ship: Elizabeth and Mary of Brighthampton / Brighthempston / Brighthelmstone [Brighton] (master Paul Prinne, prize master Jan Jacobsen Lansheer of Middelburg, otherwise John Jacobson Lanseir).
History: an English ship (ketch), bound from Dieppe to Weymouth, laden with 6 dozen French hats and linen, but mostly in ballast; taken on 27 February/9 March 1673/1674 about 3 leagues west of Beachy Head by the 10-gun, 60-man Dutch privateer Katherine Mary, otherwise Mary Katherine (John White otherwise Jan Wijdt commanding), then sent in for Middelburg and whilst in company with the privateer, which (having heard of the Peace just signed on 24 February/6 March and the prize being short of water and provisions) gave 'permission' for 6 men in a small boat from Dover to board the ketch thus retaken about 10 am on 4/14 March 1673/1674 off Dover, before the intervention of HMS Lily. The privateer was said to have taken five and a half dozen of the French hats and shared the remaining half dozen amongst the crew.
