Description

Captured ship: Goude Staer or Golden Star of Hamburg (master John or Jan Christiaensen).

History: a Hamburg merchant ship (70 lasts) bound from Hamburg to Lisbon, laden with tar and deals; seized in the Downs on 18/28 November 1693 by the privateer Bartue Sloop (Josias Williams commanding), and brought into the Downs.

Court Papers numbered CP 1-CP 10:

  • [CP 1]: three examinations;
  • [CP 2-CP 4]: claim to the ship and cargo on behalf of merchants in Hamburg and Stade;
  • [CP 5-CP 7]: two attestations sent in from Stade, with translation;
  • [CP 8-CP 9]: allegation, interrogatories;
  • [CP 10]: docket for the ship's papers.

Ship's Papers numbered SP 1-SP 7, ship's passes, accounts, bill of lading.

[Decision: ship and cargo condemned, 30 March 1693; appealed].
