Description

Folios 101-102. T [Thomas] St John to Major Spelman. Letter. 'My dear friend, Though it is my misfortune to be laid upon my back yet I have omitted nothing that I thought proper to be done in your affair. Mr Wood brought me Mr Drummond's note last Saturday for the money, and told me that Mr Drummond the Member would wait upon General Dalzel in order to join his interest with the Secretary at War upon this occasion. I wrote to the General the same day in your name and enclosed a memorandum proper for Sir William. As I am sensible that you must be in want of money, it was no small concern to me to find the delays I met with from the gentleman's promises in the payment of the two guineas I borrowed from you to serve him I therefore wrote to him this morning to let him know that I must be obliged to dispose of the security he left in my hands at any price if he did not pay the money this morning upon which he sent it'.
